Dependable Data Storage Solutions

Our CF2SCSI™ SCSIFlash™ drives are being used extensively within the nuclear and power industries as drop-in replacements for drives with either internal storage media (such as magnetic HDDs and SSDs) and/or which use removable media (such as magnetic tapes, optical disks, floppies and solid-state memory cards).

Here are some examples.

Our drives have been used to replace the following drives on the following DEC StorageWorks systems.

  • RZ29, Open VMS versions 5.5.2H and 7.1 (with others currently under development).
  • RZ23, Open VMS versions 5.5.2, 5.5.2H, 6.0, 6.2 and 7.1.
  • RZ24L, Open VMS versions 5.5.2, 5.5.2H, 6.0, 6.2 and 7.1.
  • RZ29B (based on ST15150N), Open VMS versions 5.5.2, 5.5.2H, 6.0, 6.2 and 7.1.
  • RZ29L (based on ST34371N), Open VMS versions 5.5.2H, 6.2 and 7.1 (with others currently under development).
  • RZ28M, Open VMS versions 5.5.2, 5.5.2H, 6.0, 6.2 and 7.1.
  • RWZ52, OpenVMS version 7.1 (with others currently under development).

Our drives have also been used to replace the following mechanical tape drives on DEC StorageWorks systems, all with OpenVMS versions 5.5.2, 5.5.2H, 6.0, 6.2 and 7.1.

  • TLZ07
  • TLZ09
  • TLZ09 (based on C10)
  • TLZ10
  • TZ87N
  • TZK11

Model numbers RZ23, RZ24L, RZ25L, RZ26, RZ28, RZ29, RZ29B, RZ29L, RZ73, RZ74, DP-3055, DP3110, DP3221, DSP-3053, DSP-3085, DSP-3105, DSP-3107, DSP-3133, DSP-3160, DSP-3210, DSP-5200, VP-3107, VP-3215, RWZ01, RZ26B & RZ29 disks – can also be replaced with our CF2SCSI™ SCSIFlash™ drive.

Also, where DEC towers are used, we can provide direct replacements for RZ29B-VA drives, for example, fitting them within your current canisters to replace DEC BA353-AA or Digital BA356-KC hard drive expansion units.

Alternatively, we can provide our CF2SCSI™ SCSIFlash™ in new canisters (as pictured at the top of this page) or we can provide our drives in new canisters within new towers (pictured below). And this was done recently for a customer in the semiconductor fabrication industry: see news item here.

If a move away from towers is desired, we can also provide a rackmount solution. For example, the image below shows three solid-state DEC RZxx disk drives and a solid-state drive with a removable CF card (to replicate the functionality of a DEC TLZxx tape slot).

Things to note:

  • Support for all models: VAX Station 4000, including RWZ01, RZ23, RZ26, RZ29 and RZ87.
  • Preformatted hard disk emulator for fast and easy system reload.
  • Small format PCB converts CF media to appear as a DEC SCSI device on your host’s SCSI bus.
  • 3.5-inch form factor PCB which will replace any 3.5-inch disk drive or larger drives with adaptor.
  • Will fit in a 3.5-inch disk slot using the same mountings.
  • SCSI host will typically see the device as a VAX Station SCSI disk drive.
  • Board is low power (just 5V only) and has an optional add-on display and push button user interface.
  • Microcode is field upgradable via integral serial port.
  • Optional integration support available if required.

Where to next?

What is SCSIFlash™?

Our drive solves the growing and increasingly expensive problem of repairing or replacing ageing and failing SCSI-based 2.5-inch, 3.5-inch and 5.25-inch hard disk drives, magneto optical drives, quarter-inch tape drives and floppy disk drives on computer-based legacy equipment used in telecoms and other industries.

Combining proven SCSI drive architectures with industry-standard, solid-state Flash-based memory technology, our drives are drop-in replacement for any style of SCSI-based drive.

We have two families of products:

  • SCSIFlash™. The storage media used is Compact Flash (CF), up to 128GB capacity, and the SCSI interface (SASI, SCSI-1 and SCSI-2 architectures) is standard (narrow) 8-bit with data transfer rates of up to 10MB/s.
  • SCSIFlash-Fast™. The storage media used is either CFast or M.2 SSD, up to 1TB capacity, and the data transfer rate is up to 80MB/s. SASI, SCSI-1, SCSI-2 and Ultra3 are supported, and the interface is automatically detected as being standard/narrow (8-bit SCSI, wide (16-bit) SCSI, single-ended (SE) or low voltage different (LVD) signalling.

Our drives are completely programmable, enabling the SCSI driver implementation nuances of the original equipment to be fully emulated. This means you won’t have to make any changes to your system. Our drives are truly swap-in replacements.
